Tropfest celebrates its 26th anniversary in 2018 — a true feat for an event that was cancelled due to financial mismanagement. Tropfest was started in Sydney's Tropicana cafe in 1993, with just 200 people present. Today, Tropfest takes place in North America, the Middle East, New Zealand, and South-East Asia, with Tropfest Australia attracting an audience of 100,000 when it shows in Sydney.。

The festival shows 16 short films from finalists with a signature object chosen by the company that needs to be present in the short film — such as last year's item, pineapple.。

The event will be broadcast on ABC for the first time, on its new channel, ABC COMEDY, available to stream via iView.。
